Whenever we talk about dense forests, natural beauty, and wildlife, Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, which is in Kerala, comes at the top. Hidden in the Western Ghats, this wildlife sanctuary is the first choice of wildlife lovers and photographers. What more could a wildlife lover want than to spend peaceful moments in this natural environment, far from the hustle and bustle of the crowd?
Where is Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary?
Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Idukki and Pathanamthitta districts of Kerala. It covers an area of approximately 925 sq. km. Periyar Lake lies in the heart of the sanctuary, adding to its charm. This lake was formed by the Mullaperiyar Dam built across the Periyar River. The lake serves as a vital water source for wild animals throughout the year.
What Makes Periyar Special?
Just like in other wildlife sanctuaries where safaris are done through jeeps, here the safari happens in a different way. In Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, the safari is done through boats. This is a unique way to see wild animals via boating on Periyar Lake.
If you’re coming to this wildlife sanctuary thinking that you’ll see Royal Bengal Tigers, then you might feel a little disappointed. In this sanctuary, you’re more likely to spot wild elephants in large groups rather than tigers. During summers, their sightings increase. No doubt, there are tigers in the sanctuary, but their population is low and their sightings are rare.
